Cancellation is the termination of an insurance policy before its natural expiration. You can cancel your policy at any time by providing written notice to your insurer, typically with 30 days' notice. The insurer may refund any prepaid premiums on a pro-rata basis. Insurers can cancel your policy for non-payment of premiums (after the grace period expires), for fraud or material misrepresentation on your application, or if you move to an ineligible province. In Canada, insurers cannot cancel your policy simply because you made too many claims — guaranteed renewability protects you from this. If your policy is cancelled for non-payment, you may lose your ability to reinstate it and would need to apply for a new policy, potentially facing new underwriting and exclusions for conditions that developed since your original coverage began.
