A co-payment, or co-pay, is a fixed dollar amount you pay each time you use a specific health service or fill a prescription. Unlike co-insurance, which is a percentage, a co-pay is a flat fee — for example, $10 per prescription or $25 per dental visit. Co-payments are common in provincial drug programs, such as Nova Scotia Pharmacare's $30 co-pay per generic prescription. In private insurance, co-pays are less common than co-insurance but do appear in some plan designs. Co-pays are paid at the point of service and do not usually count toward your deductible, though they may count toward an out-of-pocket maximum if your plan has one. Plans may have different co-pay amounts for different services.
