The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal plan that helps pay for dental care for Canadian residents who have no access to dental insurance and an adjusted family net income under $90,000. You (and your spouse or common-law partner) must be residents for tax purposes and have filed your tax returns. Any dental insurance makes you ineligible — coverage through your or a family member's job or pension, through a professional or student organization, or a plan you or a family member buy yourselves — even if you never use it; coverage through a government social program does not. The CDCP covers services such as exams, cleanings, fillings, root canals, gum treatment, removable dentures and oral surgery; some services need approval in advance, and orthodontics is not currently available. Depending on income, you pay nothing, 40% or 60% of the CDCP's fee, plus anything your dentist charges above what the plan pays.
